“Impossible not to dance“… Changüí is the predecessor of Son Cubano & Salsa, a gloriously syncopated style of music specifically from the region of Guantanamo, Cuba. Its origins can be traced back to the 1800s, during the days of slavery. Changüí is to Cuba and Latin America what the blues and early jazz is to American music: the roots, the foundation of the popular Latin music we hear today. Bristling with propulsive rhythms and evocative vocals, Changüí Majadero is a blazing five-piece ensemble that has honed a deeply informed and highly personal take on changüí. Founded by L.A. guitarist/vocalist Gabriel García, an expert on Cuban tres guitar, the band mixes Cuba’s rural countryside music with urban L.A. grit for a deeply intoxicating, hip-shaking, infectiously danceable experience. García’s pivotal journey to Guantanamo many years ago, where he learned the changüí from the living masters, inspired him to spread the spirit of Cuban folkloric music. Changüí Majadero has played Lincoln Center, SF Jazz, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and even Dodger Stadium.
For this special show, LowDown will have a dance floor and General Admission tickets.
