Sample 4 sustainably produced fine California wines prior to the Dom Flemons performance. Sommelier extraordinaire SARAH EFFINGER, of Provisions Fine Beverage Purveyors, will take us on a journey through a unique white, a top orange, and two fine red wines. Your ticket includes entree to Dom Flemons’ performance immediately following the tasting. As a wine tasting participant, you get the best seats!

Hey Ginger Chardonnay, Goodchild Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley, CA
Winemaker Lane Tanner won fame as one of the pioneers of California Pinot Noir, but she’s also been experimenting with fresh ginger root for years. The result is this highly regarded 100% Chardonnay. It is loosely filtered to remove any escaped ginger root and a gentle fining with volcanic ash is done to improve clarity. Ginger root is placed in the fermentation vessel and is present in the must as it ferments, then stays in the fermented wine during elevage. It is removed just prior to racking and bottling. There is no sulfur added to the wine at any point during fermentation, elevage and bottling. From a winemaking perspective it is completely SANS SOUFRE!

The next 3 wines we’ll be sampling are from FIELD RECORDINGS winery. Winemaker Andrew Jones has a keen eye for diamonds in the rough: vineyard sites that are unknown or under-appreciated but hold enormous untapped potential. He strives for unique wines loaded with personality. Field Recordings wines are sustainable and vegan, with no additives, native yeast, and minimal sulfites.

2023 ‘Skins’, Field Recordings, Central Coast, CA
A ‘Top Wine of 2018’ (Sunset Magazine), this crisp orange wine will make you a believer in non-red wines. A mix of white grapes from different vineyards (most of them organic) ferment on skins, resulting in a beautiful showcase of the delicate flavors of white wine, but with more substance and texture. Barrel aged for 4 months in neutral French oak, with flavors of apricot, Haitian orange, honeysuckle, and marzipan. Varietals are 34% Chenin Blanc, 18% Pinot Gris, 12% Colombard, 9% Xarel.Lo, 8% Verdelho, 6% Vermentino, 3% Trousseau Gris, 3% Semillon, 3% Gewurztraminer, 2% Riesling, 2% Malvasia Bianca.

2022 Freddo, Field Recordings, Paso Robles, CA
The ideal antipasto wine, this tasty red evokes fresh cranberry, Montmorency cherries, and strawberry. It is often served with a chill. Composed of 79% Sangiovese, 16% Dolcetto, and 5% Valdiguié from Creston Ridge (Sip Certified), Trousdale (Sip Certified), Bing (Organic) and Shell Creek (Organic) vineyards.

2021 ‘Franc’, Field Recordings, Paso Robles, CA
(92 Points – Wilfred Wong – “lovely and focused”) A rustic punch of blueberries, black cherries and red currants with a touch of mint and rosemary, this 100% Cabernet Franc from Hinterland (Organic), Dry Creek, and Dos Robles vineyards ferments in open-top bins with native yeast, and is then aged 7 months in neutral French oak barriques and American oak foeder.

Even before he co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops with bandmate Rhiannon Giddens, Flemons was a hardcore preservationist, storyteller, and instrumentalist—especially of songs of the African-American experience. The GRAMMY winner has long set himself apart by finding forgotten folk songs and making them live again, and his repertoire covers a century of early American popular music. Equally virtuosic on the banjo, guitar, harmonica, jug, percussion, quills, fife and rhythm bones, Flemons is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, actor, slam poet, music scholar, historian, and record collector. He is is host of the American Songster Radio show on Nashville’s WSM Radio. His latest album, Traveling Wildfire, is his first since 2018’s Black Cowboys and his second for Smithsonian Folkways.
