organic moonshine roots music @ OKeclecticFEST
Saturday, May 11, 2019 | 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
One of the most admired artists to break through in the last decade, Valerie June’s “organic moonshine roots music” blends southern sounds, African rhythms and ambient atmospherics into something altogether futuristic and new. A songwriter first and foremost, she willfully blurs the lines among genres and sonic eras, drawing on folk, soul, country, blues and R&B as needed, sometimes accompanied by stark banjo, sometimes by rich horns and vintage organ. Despite the music’s varied nature, the songs all belong to a cohesive family, tied together by June’s one-of-a-kind soulful voice. Her 2011 critically acclaimed breakout record, Pushin’ Against A Stone, produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, appeared on numerous Best Of lists and received near-universal acclaim. Her follow-up, the stunning The Order Of Time, vaulted her from being Memphis, Tennessee’s best kept secret to being hailed by The New York Times as one of America’s “most intriguing, fully formed new talents.” The New Yorker was captivated by her “unique, stunning voice,” Rolling Stone dubbed her “unstoppable,” and NPR called her “an elemental talent born with the ability to rearrange the clouds themselves.” She wowed TV audiences with spellbinding performances on The Tonight Show, The Late Show, and Austin City Limits, and graced some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including a gig at Obama’s White House. We are proud to welcome June to Tulsa’s inaugural OKeclecticFEST.
