Badlands National Park has received approximately $120,000 for Inflation Reduction Act Investments. Funds will support ongoing efforts for bison conservation by building additional outdoor infrastructure. Badlands is home to one of the largest federal bison herds in North America and is an important part of the metapopulation of federal bison. Today at Badlands National Park a herd of approximately 1,000 animals roam on a range of about 80,000 acres. The herd is culled almost annually, and surplus bison are distributed mostly through the InterTribal Buffalo Council. Inflation Reduction Act investments will enhance bison corral facilities by building additional pens, alleyways, and a loading chute. This additional infrastructure will help safely hold then transfer live bison to Native American Tribes.NPS Photo: head-on view of a Bison cow and calf grazing in the prairie (photo by E. Welsh) ...
